Second, and perhaps more important, the hijackings would be an opportunity to bring the plight of the Palestinians to the attention of the whole world. The El Al hijacking from Amsterdam was not successful; it was foiled by the pilot and authorities.

Passengers with dual nationalities (Israeli and something else); anyone who had served as a military pilot in Israel; and diplomats from Switzerland, Israel, Britain, and the United States were held captive. In the meantime, Israel had detained hundreds of relatives of the PFLP leaders inside the Occupied Palestinian Territories and issued a warning to Jordan that if they did not take action, Israel would conduct a large military operation to free the hostages. The remaining hostages were moved to a PFLP hideout not far from one of the Palestinian refugee camps just outside of Amman.

Israel had threatened to take over the situation in this regard if Jordan didn’t. What finally caused Jordan to succumb to this pressure was the PFLP hijacking of four commercial airliners in September 1970. Masterminded by Dr. Haddad, the plan was for planes of four major air carriers to be hijacked by the PFLP and landed at Dawson’s Field, an emergency runway built during World War II by the British in the Zarqa’ Desert, east of Amman.
