Through this process of self-critical reasoning, culture seeks to reinvent itself from within, while the possibility that the new will come from outside it is left open. In this Adorno shares some of Nietzsche's longing for a revaluation of all values. But where Nietzsche tends to fear the levelling force of bourgeois equality, Adorno refuses to rush to judgement. He cannot embrace the destruction of culture, since that would mean affirming its untruth, from culture's point of view. But his mourning of culture is always tinged with the knowledge that something else may be beyond its demise.

Where most western classical music of the eighteenth and nineteenth centuries had been organized around a conventional set of relationships between notes at particular points on the musical scale, atonal music sought a greater fluidity and freedom through refusing to settle into such pre-determined patterns. Rather than imposing a rigid 'system' on his composition, working with twelve tones in fact allowed Schoenberg to create work which moved more freely and more dramatically away from conventional musical forms.

These questions can never again be separated in regard to Adorno's work, and the characteristic density and power of his writing comes from the close interweaving of these three aspects. Adorno followed Horkheimer to Los Angeles in 1941 although characteristically, he was reluctant to leave his new home in New York - and their close collaboration was productive. He was also writing with a former associate of the Schoenberg circle in Vienna, Hans Eisler, who had moved towards a more directly politicized music under the influence of Brecht (Composing for the Films was published, but only under Eisler's name, in 1947); and he was famously consulted by the novelist Thomas Mann, who was working on his own music book, Dr Faustus, and in which lengthy extracts from Adorno's manuscripts on music are reproduced verbatim.
